Microplastic Extraction from Agricultural Soils Using Canola Oil and Unsaturated Sodium Chloride Solution and Evaluation by Incineration Method

Environmental pollution by microplastics (MPs) has become a global problem, but little is known about MPs in soils. This because MP extraction methods from soils have not yet been standardized. In this study, we tried to establish simple and economical method extract soil using the buoyancy of canola oil density separation process sodium chloride (NaCl). addition, incineration was adapted evaluate effectiveness precisely. First, ability suitability seven different oils were investigated selected. Then, spiking recovery test performed with NaCl solution for low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinylchloride (PVC) as follows: (1) mixtures prepared, (2) 5 g L−1 added shaken thoroughly, (3) phase containing separated after sedimentation, (4) extracted rinsed 99.5% ethanol, (5) organic adherents digested hydrogen peroxide. After drying incineration, substantial rates calculated. particles (<1 mm) five typical Japanese agricultural soils, recoveries LDPE, PP, PVC 95.2–98.3%, 95.2–98.7%, 76.0–80.5%, respectively, higher than those obtained saturated solution. conclusion, effective extracting MPs, especially LDPE less sensitive type, texture, physicochemical properties.
